Which documents require notarization in Armenia

3 min read

Notarization is needed not only for transactions but also for translations, powers of attorney, consents and copies. In this post we have collected the cases people come across most often and explained how notarization differs from an apostille.

What is usually certified by a notary

Document or actionWhat the notary doesNote
Armenian translation of a foreign-language documentCertifies the translation together with the originalGovernment bodies (for example, the passport office) require a notarized translation specifically
Power of attorney (personal or commercial)Certifies the signature and the content of the authorityFor use abroad an apostille is often needed as well
Owner’s consentCertifies the consent when the owner cannot be presentFor example, when registering at someone else’s address, the Migration and Citizenship Service requires a notarized consent stating the first name, surname, patronymic and date of birth of those being registered
Copy of a documentCertifies that the copy matches the originalAn ordinary photocopy is not enough for many authorities
Real estate transactionsCertifies the contractAdditional requirements depend on the transaction — check with the notary
Declaration, signature authenticationCertifies the signatureUsed in courts, banks and foreign authorities

The list is not exhaustive. The final requirement is always set by the authority to which you submit the document.

Notarization and the apostille are two different things

A notary certifies the authenticity of a document, signature or translation within Armenia. An apostille is a later step for use abroad, and it is issued only by the state: the Ministry of Justice of Armenia (for civil status, notarial, court and other official documents) or the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (for educational documents).

An important rule: for a translation to receive an apostille, it must first be notarized — an uncertified translation, an ordinary copy or a scan cannot be apostilled. So the usual order is: translation, notarization, apostille (if the country is party to the Hague Convention). Other countries may require consular legalisation. Apostil.am does not issue apostilles. We give free advice on which authority to contact and in what order to take the steps, translate the document and the text of the apostille, and go to the notary on your behalf.

What to know about notarized translation

  1. The notary binds the translation to the original (or its notarized copy), so the original must reach us — in person or by courier. There is no such thing as a notarized translation from a scan or online.
  2. The scan is used only to calculate the price.
  3. If you need a fast online option, order a stamped translation: you send a scan and receive a PDF with the agency stamp by e-mail, and the paper copy by courier in Yerevan or at our office. It is suitable when notarization is not required.

Questions and answers

Does the notary translate the document? No, a translator does the translation and the notary certifies it.

Can an apostille be placed on an ordinary scan or copy? No. An apostille is placed on an official document or a notarized translation, but not on an ordinary scan or copy.

This is general information, not legal advice. We recommend confirming the requirements with the authority to which you are submitting the document.
