If you married in Italy, the USA, Russia or another country and now need to submit the certificate in Armenia, you will need a translation of the foreign marriage certificate into Armenian. In this guide we explain when it is required, where the apostille is placed, why the original is needed and how to write names in Armenian so that they match your Armenian documents.

Foreign marriage certificate translation into Armenian: apostilled certificate and notarized translation

When do you need a foreign marriage certificate translated into Armenian?

A marriage concluded abroad sooner or later “meets” Armenian state bodies. In our practice these are the most common cases:

  • Civil registry offices. Reporting the marriage to the Armenian civil status registration system.
  • Passport and change of surname. If you changed your surname after marriage but your Armenian passport still shows the old one.
  • Your spouse’s status in Armenia. Residence status or citizenship for a foreign spouse.
  • Children’s documents. Registering the birth of a child born abroad, passport, citizenship.
  • Property, banking, inheritance. Notarial transactions where marital status must be confirmed.

For example, Marine married in Madrid and wanted an Armenian passport with her husband’s surname. She needed the Spanish certificate with an apostille and a notarized Armenian translation.

Before ordering the translation, it is worth finding out which authority will receive it and how many copies you need. Sometimes the same document is needed by the civil registry, the passport service and a notary. Knowing this in advance saves time and repeat delivery costs.

Registering a marriage concluded abroad in Armenia: the general logic

The procedure may differ depending on who is applying, where the marriage took place and why the certificate is being submitted. In general the steps are:

  1. You obtain the marriage certificate in the country where you married.
  2. In the same country the certificate receives an apostille or consular legalisation.
  3. The original reaches our office, and we prepare the Armenian translation, including the apostille text.
  4. The translation is notarized.
  5. You submit the document to the relevant Armenian authority.

Check the list of requirements, deadlines and state fees with the authority you are applying to.

Apostille or legalisation — in the country that issued the certificate

This is where most mistakes happen. An apostille on a foreign document cannot be placed in Armenia. It is issued by the competent authority of the country where the certificate was issued. In Armenia apostilles are placed only on Armenian documents: by the Ministry of Justice for civil status, notarial and court documents, and by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports for educational documents.

Where the certificate was issuedWhat is usually neededWhere
A Hague Convention country (e.g. Italy, Spain, USA)ApostilleAt the competent authority of that country
A country that has not joined the conventionConsular legalisationIn that country and at the Armenian embassy or consulate
A country with a bilateral agreementSometimes no requirementCheck with the receiving Armenian authority

To learn how an apostille differs from legalisation and notarization, read apostille or consular legalisation and which documents require notarization. If the procedure for your certificate is unclear, we will help you work it out free of charge.

Certificates issued in CIS countries, such as Russia, are a special case. Thanks to intergovernmental agreements, an apostille is sometimes not required for them, but this is not a general rule for all authorities. For example, Lusine brought a certificate issued in Moscow without an apostille. Before translating, we advised her to call the authority where she was going to apply, and we started work only after getting the answer. This saved her both unnecessary costs and a rejection.

Notarized translation into Armenian: why the original is needed

Armenian state bodies usually require a notarized translation into Armenian for foreign documents. Still, check the requirement with the specific authority.

With a notarized translation, the notary binds the translation to the original or its notarized copy. So the document must physically reach our office — in person, through a relative or by international courier. We need the scan only to estimate the price and turnaround. We go to the notary on your behalf, and we can deliver the finished document by courier in Yerevan or keep it at our office.

A practical tip: if you also need the original for other purposes, consider obtaining more than one copy in the country where the certificate was issued.

A stamped translation is fully online and suitable when the document is needed by a lawyer, an employer or for preliminary review. If you are not sure what you need, call +374 33 130371 or write on WhatsApp/Viber.

Names in Armenian: matching Armenian records

Your name

Your first name and surname in Armenian must be written exactly as in your Armenian passport or birth certificate. If the Italian certificate says “Ovanesian” and your passport says “Հովհաննիսյան”, the translation will use “Հովհաննիսյան”, because the authority will compare the certificate with your Armenian records. So please send us a copy of your passport or birth certificate.

Your foreign spouse’s name

We transliterate foreign names by pronunciation and the accepted Armenian form: for example, “Jean-Luc” becomes «Ժան-Լյուկ» and “Müller” becomes «Մյուլլեր». If your spouse’s name has already been written in an Armenian document, such as a residence card, we match that spelling.

The surname after marriage

Countries write surnames differently. Spain has double surnames, and German documents often show the birth name marked “geb.” (née). We translate this information clearly and unambiguously so that the official understands which surname is the former one and which is the new one.

Dates, place names and the apostille text

Dates are written differently in different countries: the American “03/04/2024” is not 3 April but 4 March. We write dates in words or in an unambiguous format so that there is no room for error. City and country names are given in the accepted Armenian form, for example “München” as «Մյունխեն». The apostille is often in two or three languages; we translate it in full — with stamps, the signatory’s position and the number — because the official may check exactly those details.

The most common mistakes

  • There is no apostille, and this only comes to light after the translation.
  • Your surname is spelled in the translation differently from your passport.
  • Only the front of the certificate was translated, not the notes on the back.

What to send us: a checklist

  1. A scan of the foreign certificate together with the apostille or legalisation page.
  2. A copy of your Armenian passport or birth certificate, for the names.
  3. A copy of your spouse’s passport or the spelling of their name, if it already appears in an Armenian document.
  4. Which authority you will submit the translation to.
  5. How the original will reach us — in person or by courier.

Turnaround and cost

A marriage certificate is usually one standard page, and the apostille text adds a little to the volume. Standard translation costs from 2,500 AMD per standard page (1,800 characters), from Russian from 3,000 AMD, and urgent orders add 50%. Once we have the original, a notarized translation is often ready in one or two working days. See the exact price, including the notary fee, in the calculator.

For example, Gevorg sent his apostilled marriage certificate from Los Angeles by DHL. We agreed the price and the spelling of names in advance from the scan, and two days after the document arrived his mother collected the finished notarized translation in Yerevan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a foreign marriage certificate need an apostille?

As a rule, yes: to be used in Armenia, a foreign certificate must have an apostille (if the country is party to the Hague Convention) or consular legalisation. The apostille is placed by the competent authority of the country that issued the certificate. Check the requirements for your case with the receiving Armenian authority.

Can I send the certificate from abroad?

Yes. For a notarized translation the original must physically reach our office, but you can send it by international courier or hand it over through a relative. Send a scan first for a quote; we go to the notary on your behalf.

How do you write a foreign spouse’s name in Armenian?

We transliterate foreign names by pronunciation and accepted Armenian spelling, and we write your name exactly as it appears in your Armenian passport or birth certificate. If your spouse’s name already appears in an Armenian document, send us a copy so that the spelling matches.

Is a stamped translation enough for the civil registry?

State bodies usually require a notarized translation. A stamped translation is suitable when the document goes to a lawyer, an employer or for preliminary review. Check the specific authority’s requirement before ordering.

From which languages do you translate marriage certificates into Armenian?

From English, Russian, French, German, Spanish and Italian. Prices start at 2,500 AMD per standard page, from Russian at 3,000 AMD, and urgent orders are +50%. You can see the notary fee in the calculator.
